Our Career and Life Coaching clients usually tell me similar things. Most are looking for a path out of their current position into something that utilizes their true passion. Many times I hear from professionals stuck in their jobs that they are there because someone along the way pushed them there. Parents, counselors, pastors and other influential people have a way of trying to be helpful, but they can also get us off course.

I believe each of us were created for a purpose. If we do not pursue that purpose and use our God-given gifts and talents, it is a waste of resources. While many good-meaning people try to push us in the right direction, the best way to for us to determine our true passions is to step backwards and take a look inside ourselves.

Seek the help of a good coach, friend or mentor to help during your time of struggle, but always keep in mind their background when giving advice. For the same reason I don’t take financial advice from broke people, you too should not take career advice from someone that hates their job.

Instead, seek out the advice of someone who is living their true purpose; someone who understands their values, dreams and passions and who effectively uses their skills and abilities to enrich the world and the lives of others. Ask them how they overcame the struggles of not knowing their purpose. Learn from them about how they got to their current position in life. It is only then that you will be able to do the same.
