Many times as I counsel an individual or a couple, we spend some time talking about the past. Things our parents did and how they handled their money may have had a negative impact on how we live and handle money. While things in the past have had consequences certainly and lasting impacts on us, if we continue to live in the past, instead of looking into the future and living in the present, we will never be able to grow and change our habits for the better. If you are the way you are because "they snatched you off the potty too soon..." or some other reason, then this is what you do: you take the person who's responsible for the way you are to the psychologist to be treated, and you will get better! Do you see how that doesn't work? While the past has some bearing on who we are today, we must look to the future to dictate our present. "Your past is important, but it is not nearly as important as the way you see your future." - Dr. Tony Compolo While your past cannot be changed, your future can be written however you see fit. While I help people get to where they want to be, only you can dictate where you will be in 10 years. Will you stop living your life because of things that happened in the past, or will you instead look to the future and change the way you live now to obtain your goals? The choice is yours.
