The leopard (Panthera pardus) is dispersed over a wider area today than that of any of the other large cats. It is one of the roaring cats, capable of producing a deep sawing roar similar to that of the jaguar. The leopard coat pattern has a clear yellow coat with dark spots or rosettes. Some leopards’ coats may vary in colour, and the jet-black melanistic type is also popularly called the ‘Black Panther’ . Its compact body, with the graceful trademark tail dangling elegantly from a tree like a velvet rope, is the image that captures the essence of this most powerful carnivore. Leopards prey upon cattle, dogs’ and even small children, earning the dubious reputation of being man-eaters. In India a South – East Asia its numbers have dwindled mainly due to hunting for its prized fur and through loss of natural habit because of the human population explosion.
