Hot Tub Chemicals So you installed your hot tub into your home or on the patio but there is still another step that you have to complete before using the hot tub. You have to put the chemicals into the hot tub. You have to take care of the water in the hot tub by using a few different chemicals regularly. Maintaining your hot tub will make it stay enjoyable for a long period of time. There are many different types of hot tub chemicals, so you need to know which ones are the right ones to purchase. For people with less experience in buying chemicals for hot tubs, they probably get very confused with what they should be buying. It isn’t really that hard to purchase the right chemicals for your hot tub as long as you know what to stay away from. The company that makes the chemicals doesn’t matter as it is all the same, it’s the chemicals that matters. You have to put your hot tub water’s pH and chlorine levels up in a safe target range and don’t let it change, keeping it at the same level every day so that the water is safe to use and looks clean. The first chemicals which you will put into your hot tub will increase the pH. There are various names that are put on it but you should just look for the label which states that it raises the pH. At the start, you will raise the pH level in the process of a few hours to bring it to a level of 7.2-7.6 parts per million. Another question that many people have is rather to get chlorine or bromine. A lot of people are allergic to chlorine, and that is when bromine is usually used, especially in swimming pools. However, you need a chlorine stabilizer which is in granules the shape of small pucks that may be inside of a floating container which is used to hold the pucks. This will always be in the tub and needs to be refilled when emptied. When you get the pH to the desired level, you need to raise the chlorine to around 1.0-1.5 parts per million. This process should also take only a couple of hours. You may decide to begin to increase the chlorine levels at the start by putting in half a cup of bleach into your hot tub to make the whole process faster. Just make sure that you check the levels so that it is brought to the final ideal range not too fast. If you don’t want to use chlorine, you can use bromine instead. Some people don’t like the smell of chlorine or may be allergic to it so using bromine is always fine. Using bromine will not be any different than using chlorine performance wise. The last chemical which you will use with your hot tub is to keep the water looking clear. The chemical package should say something relatively like “Concentrated clarifier for spa waters” and anything relatively similar. This chemical comes in both liquid and granule form. Depending on where you live and what the water is like there, you may also be interested in using a chemical which helps stop the build up of scale which is usually caused by hard water. Your hot tub dealer should be able to inform you if your area fits this category or not. Just remember that there are a lot of fancy names for the chemicals but when it comes right down to it, they are all the same, just packaged different.
