It is widely known that strength training, aerobic exercise, and proper nutrition are essential in maintaining a balanced health and fitness regimen. What has taken the backseat are the health benefits of stretching. Stretching is an integral part of an exercise program, if done before workout, it may prepare the body for a long strenuous workout especially for those who have tight muscles. Stretching after workout may promote improved range of motion for the joints and improve flexibility, balance, and coordination. This activity is also relaxing and may relieve symptoms of certain conditions like arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Other benefits of stretching may include the following:
Improves physical performance
Flexible muscles can improve performances like lifting heavy packages, hurrying to catch a bus, walking on the stairs, among others.
Improves blood circulation
Stretching improves the blood flow to the muscles which may speed recovery after injuries.
Promotes better posture
Frequent stretching keeps the muscles from getting tight, which allows proper posture and minimize aches and pains.
Relieve stress.
Stretching eases tension in the muscles that often accompany stress.
Help prevent injury.
Preparing the joints and muscles for a strenuous activity can prevent injuries, especially if the muscles or joints are tight.
The health benefits of stretching can only be achieved if it is done properly. A common mistake that many people make while doing stretching exercises is to bounce into the stretch. Bouncing is not a good idea because it’s a sharp, abrupt movement that can do a lot of damage to the muscles. This practice may cause small tears in the muscle and leave scar tissues as the muscle heals, this may further tighten the muscles. Bouncing may also lead to reduced flexibility and more prone to pain. Individuals who want to engage in flexibility training like stretching are advised to focus on the specific muscles that are stretched and gradually pushing the limit without causing pain. In addition to this precaution, individuals who are new to flexibility training are advised to get evaluated by a health and fitness professional or a physical therapist.
One of the great things about stretching is that it can be done anywhere and anytime. Stretching exercises are not limited to exercising alone, it can be done in the office, the car, or going out through one's daily routine. Stretching both before and after your fitness program is important in maintaining a healthy body and also reduce the development of injuries. It is also a great way to lighten up, relax and reduce stress.
However, pain and injury maybe experienced every once in awhile by individuals who do stretching exercises. The best thing to do when this happens is take rest until the pain totally heals. Individuals who encounter this condition should avoid strenuous activities to avoid health complications. Pain killers may also be taken to reduce the pain that may be associated with this condition. Like other drugs, pain killers should be taken properly to avoid drug interactions, pain killer addiction, allergies, among others. It is best to consult one's general physician before engaging in any form of treatment. Effective communication with professionals is essential in lessening the development of injuries and treating them.
