Facts about the efficiency of Male Pheromones

In recent times, a lot of companies are advertising in the web profusely about their pheromone based products. While Pheromones have been found to attract women, the claims of these companies about the power of their products need to be evaluated with caution. Scientific evidences can help one in reaching a conclusion.

For many years, most of the research about pheromones was conducted in other species. Dating back to the 1950s, scientists have proven that insects and animals secrete substances that directly affect the behavior of ‘conspecifics’ – members of the same species. In insects and animals, pheromones can signal the presence of food sources, select and attract mates, initiate sexual activity, repel intruders, and signal alarm.

However, the scientific community has been slow to document the existence of pheromones in humans. Most of the research has taken place within the last 20 years and, in particular, within the last decade. And the nature of that research has been exclusively around the role of pheromones in promoting sexual attraction and sexual activity.

The first experiment that conclusively proved the existence of human pheromones actually focused on women. In a landmark study, researchers proved that extracts from the underarms of women caused them to synchronize their menstrual cycles. Underarm secretions were used in this experiment because the axillary apocrine glands are responsible for producing the highest concentration of pheromones in both men and women.

With this proof in hand, scientists began to look for the male version of these chemical messengers. One of the earliest studies asked men to sleep in T shirts two nights in a row while refraining from using any scented soaps or other personal hygiene products. The T-shirts were thus redolent of male pheromones. After the second night, the scientists then asked women to choose the T-shirts that smelled best to them.

Women preferred the scent of men whose immune profile was different from their own – many of them said the scent of the shirts reminded them of their husbands or brothers. This important study documented the ability of male pheromones to enable healthy mate selection, since healthier offspring result when parents have a range of immune strengths.

Subsequent studies proved that they influence the way that both men and women judge the appearance of strangers. Large groups of men and women made substantially different interpretations of the photographs of strangers while under the ‘influence’ of male pheromones.

They also proved that pheromones alter women’s physiology, increasing the amount of circulating sex-related hormones and regulating erratic menstrual cycles in women. No substance other than pheromones is capable of doing this.

Scientists have also documented changes in the electrical activity of women’s brains after exposure to male pheromones. In related studies, women report feeling happier, calmer, more relaxed, and more attentive and focused after being exposed to male pheromones.

The final piece of the proof is still in the making. What are needed are rigorous studies that focus on the potential for male pheromones to actually increase sexual activity among women. In humans, sexual activity results from a complex interchange of a number of factors, including visual stimulation, auditory cues, hormone levels, thoughts, and emotions, so sorting out the influence of pheromones is challenging. However, the coming years will almost certainly reveal the final bit of proof needed to establish, once and for all, that pheromones are the undetected chemical messengers of sexual activity.
