Belmont Park first opened its doors on May 4, 1905 and is the host of the most difficult race of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes. Belmont Park is often referred to as the Championship Track because almost every major champion Thoroughbred racehorse has had to win at Belmont Park, including each and every one of the Triple Crown winners. One of the great champions to race over the track set two records during the Belmont Stakes. Secretariat clocked a final time of two minutes and twenty four seconds, which was not only a track record; it was a world record that still exists to this day. Another record that Secretariat set in the race was the largest margin of victory, which was thirty one lengths. While Secretariat set two records during the Belmont Stakes, there are many other notable achievements that have been accomplished at the historic racetrack. On the opening day of the track in 1905, there was a dead heat between Race King and Sysonby in the Met Cap. Belmont Park was also the location of the famous International match race between Kentucky Derby winner Zev and the winner of the Epson Derby Papyrus. The Kentucky Derby winner Zev won the historic match race by five lengths. Belmont Park was also the site of the famous stretch duel between Affirmed and Alydar in 1978, the last year to produce a Triple Crown winner. Belmont Park also saw two Triple Crown winners battle each other in the Marlboro Cup in September of 1978. In this instance, Seattle Slew defeated Affirmed. While Belmont Park is the home of the Belmont Stakes, in the early years, the race was run at a different racetrack. The first Belmont Stakes was run at Jerome Park located in the Bronx. The race was moved to Belmont Park in 1905 when the track opened. The Belmont Stakes was held at Aqueduct during the years of 1963-1967 due to renovations that were taking place at Belmont Park. The only time that the Belmont Stakes was not run was during the years of 1911 and 1912 due to anti-betting legislation that was passed in the state of New York. While the Belmont Stakes is the most famous race held at Belmont Park, the racetrack is also the home of several other Grade 1 Stakes races including the Metropolitan Handicap and the Jockey Club Gold Cup.
