Plantar Fasciitis Treatment: Relieving Your Heel Pain

Plantar fasciitis treatment is not at all costly and it does not take much of your time.

Plantar fasciitis affects the foot’s surface, inflaming the tough and fibrous tissues band, plantar fascia, which runs from heel bone to base of toes. The main cause of this condition is the development of a tear in the plantar fascia which leads to acute foot pain while walking in the morning for the first time, while walking after sitting for long period of time or after taking a prolonged rest.

People with high arches or flat feet are more prone to the occurrence of this condition. Other victims of plantar fasciitis are obese people, dancers, runners, and people who have to stand for a long period of time during their work hours. Direct trauma or arthritis can also lead to this ailment.

Plantar fasciitis treatment is quite easy, cost-effective and requires quite a short period of time. In most of the cases, simple stretch exercises and adequate rest are sufficient for curing the problem but if not diagnosed timely and treated properly, the condition may become unremitting. The problem should not be left untreated or ignored.

Acute pain can sometimes lead to spontaneous changes in gait, leading to other problems like backache, hip pain and knee pain.

In the initial stage of the problem, plantar fasciitis treatment includes applying ice to the affected area that has pain, taking adequate rest, taking anti-inflammatory pain relieving medicines and gentle strengthening, and stretching exercises for relaxing the tissues.

These exercises increase the flexibility of the ligaments and strengthen the muscles, which support the arch, thus reducing stress on the ligaments. Wearing night splints also keeps the tissues stretched gently during the night, thus relieving the person from pain during the initial morning steps. Night splint is in the form of a brace, which attaches to the ankle, foot and the lower part of the leg and can be worn during the night just before going to bed. Its intention is to elongate the ligaments of plantar fascia while the person is sleeping.

For some people, different kinds of shoe inserts known as the orthotics can lesser the pain. In cases when patients are not affected by the above mentioned conventional methods of treatment, they should consult a qualified physician who can use the cortisone injections for relieving the pain.

And last of all, the plantar fasciitis treatment procedures, the physicians may recommend surgical methods to cure the problem. A majority of patients report that their pain has been relieved after the surgery. The surgical procedure involves release or removal of the inflamed tissues from the bone of the heel.

During the recent years, a new type of treatment known as the Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) has been developed, which involves high energy shock wave treatment and low energy shock wave treatment for curing plantar fasciitis. This shock wave therapy causes stimulation in the repair of injured tissues and the patients get relief from the symptoms of the problem of plantar fasciitis.

Shock waves are the sound waves that can create vibrations and can cause controlled injuries to the tissues and the surrounding area of the heel. The body of the person responds to it by increasing the healing ability in that area thus stimulating the process of repair.
