Due to high production cost, ABC has decided to turn down the offer to broadcast the controversial UK reality series The Golden Cage, which is said to be the successor to Big Brother.

The Golden Cage, broadcasted in the Netherlands by RTL, has a similar concept to Big Brother where contestants will be living together in a big house. However, the goal of The Golden Cage is for the housemates to irritate each other that would force them one by one to leave the house. The last one remaining will be The Golden Cage winner and shall have the house for himself.

Unlike in the Big Brother, there is no specific time frame in The Golden Cage. The contestants could stay in the house for months, if not years. The only way for them to be released is for them to voluntarily leave the house or if the other contestants vote them off during the bimonthly “firings.”

The negotiation with ABC to acquire The Golden Cage has been going on for over a year. When John de Mol, creator of Fear Factor and Big Brother decided to return to the US reality TV circuit, people have been expecting that ABC would sign the deal.

John de Mol compares The Golden Cage to a Broadway musical. “It's an open-ended reality show where nobody knows how long it's going to last," he described. "The format is so bloody simple, you wonder why we haven't thought of it before."

The Golden Cage is the original title for Big Brother. But it was later changed since the term, Cage seemed unsuitable for the concept of the show. However, de Mol did not give up on the name and eventually used it for another reality series with a different format.
